CAMHS Professionals are specialist mental health recruiters, and we are always looking for experienced CAMHS ASD Assessors from a nursing background to join our UK-wide network on a contract basis. If you have the clinical skills, training, and experience to assess autism in children and young people to a high standard — we have the contracts.

What the role actually looks like

CAMHS neurodevelopmental assessment services

Specialist autism diagnostic clinics

Tier 3 community CAMHS teams with ASD pathways

NHS and independent diagnostic services

Multi-agency neurodevelopmental hubs

Day-to-day responsibilities will include:

Conducting comprehensive autism assessments for children and young people using gold-standard diagnostic tools including ADOS-2 and ADI-R

Gathering multi-informant clinical histories from parents, carers, schools, and other involved professionals

Integrating assessment findings with wider clinical information to contribute to diagnostic formulations within the MDT

Participating in diagnostic consensus meetings alongside psychiatrists, psychologists, and speech and language therapists

Producing detailed, high-quality written diagnostic reports to agreed standards and timescales

Communicating diagnostic outcomes sensitively and clearly to young people, families, and carers

Supporting post-diagnostic pathways including psychoeducation, signposting, and onward referral

Contributing to waiting list management and assessment pathway development where required

Maintaining accurate, contemporaneous clinical records in line with NMC and organisational standards

Attending and contributing to peer supervision, quality assurance, and service development activities

What we need from you

Essential:

Active NMC registration (Mental Health or Children's nursing field) — no restrictions or conditions

Formal training in ADOS-2 administration and scoring (certificate required)

Formal training in ADI-R administration and scoring (certificate required)

Demonstrable experience conducting autism assessments in a CAMHS or neurodevelopmental setting

Strong clinical report writing skills — able to produce clear, detailed, and family-accessible diagnostic reports

Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain)

Up-to-date mandatory training including BLS and safeguarding children Level 2+

Sound knowledge of autism presentations across genders, developmental stages, and co-occurring conditions

Desirable (but not always required):

Experience with co-occurring presentations such as ADHD, anxiety, learning disability, or sensory processing difficulties

Competency in additional neurodevelopmental assessment tools (e.g. ABAS, VABS, cognitive screening)

Experience presenting findings at diagnostic feedback meetings and supporting families post-diagnosis

Supervisory or mentorship experience within a CAMHS or neurodevelopmental setting

Knowledge of local and national autism diagnostic frameworks including NICE guidelines and the Autism Act
