Disabled Facilities Grants Officer

Location: London
Contract: 3 months
Hours: Full-time
Pay: £27.29 per hour PAYE / £36.78 per hour Umbrella
Service: Private Sector Housing / DFG Home Adaptations

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Private Sector Housing Officer – Disabled Facilities Grants (DFG) to join a London local authority for an initial 3-month contract.

This is an excellent opportunity for a housing professional with experience in DFG administration, property inspections, housing conditions, adaptations and grant work, who is passionate about helping vulnerable residents remain independent in their own homes.

Key Responsibilities

* Assess and process Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) and Minor Adaptations applications.

* Interpret Occupational Therapist (OT) recommendations and determine appropriate property adaptations.

* Undertake residential property inspections and assess housing conditions.

* Prepare schedules of works, specifications and reports for adaptation and improvement works.

* Scrutinise estimates, tenders and schedules of work to ensure value for money.

* Monitor adaptation works and liaise with residents, contractors, OTs, architects and internal teams.

* Carry out financial means-test assessments where required.

* Apply relevant housing legislation, including the Housing Act 2004 and legislation governing Disabled Facilities Grants.

* Assess housing hazards using the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS).

* Provide advice and take appropriate enforcement action where necessary.

* Maintain accurate case records and manage a demanding caseload to agreed deadlines.

* Work sensitively with vulnerable adults and children, providing a high standard of customer care.

* Contribute to effective partnership working across housing, adult social care and other professional services.

Essential Experience & Skills

The successful candidate will ideally have:

* Previous experience administering Disabled Facilities Grants within a local authority environment.

* Experience interpreting OT recommendations and developing appropriate adaptation solutions.

* Knowledge of building construction, building regulations and health & safety.

* Experience carrying out residential property inspections and preparing schedules of works/specifications.

* Experience of financial means testing and knowledge of relevant government benefits.

* Knowledge of the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996 and associated DFG processes.

* Experience of housing conditions, HHSRS, enforcement and/or private sector housing.

* Excellent communication, organisational and customer service skills.

* Ability to manage multiple cases, meet deadlines and work independently.

* Experience working with vulnerable residents and undertaking lone-working visits.

* A relevant housing/environmental health qualification is desirable, together with recognised HHSRS assessor training.
